It is pretty amazing to know that white light is not
just made of a color, but a mixture of 7 different
colors, and that black is not a color, but actually the
absence of all colors. This changes the way we see
things and what we know about the colors we
perceive.
Today we will learn more about the spectrum of light, the way colors are formed and the characteristics of the waves that make up each color. Let's solve the following activities in groups:
1) Visit the DUCKSTERS website and answer:
a) Just like with sound, we can only see a part of the spectrum, since our eyes have certain characteristics that allow us to see only some colors or part of the spectrum. What part of the spectrum can we see? (frequency range)
b) Mention the names of the non-visible types of waves.
c) In the visible spectrum, the color of the light depends on its: ________________
d) Which color has the lowest frequency? which one has the largest?
2) The color of the light is also related to its
temperature. Visit the NASA website and
under title "Color and temperature" Explain
how does the color of a star change according
to the temperature?
3) The diagram shows white light being separated into different colours. The colours are seen on a white screen.
a) Which letter shows the
position of red light on the
screen?
b) Which letter shows the colour of light that is
refracted through the smallest angle?
c) What word describes the range of colours seen on the screen?
(refraction reflected separated spectrum
d) Explain why drops of water are needed for a rainbow to be seen.
e) When looking at a rainbow, some people see indigo and violet as the
same colour. How many colours will these people say they can see in the rainbow?
4) Draw a rainbow with the 7 colors and the right order in which they are displayed. Label the name of each color
We have reviewed that there are seven colours in white light. These are
the colours that can be seen in the rainbow.
However, there are three colours of light from which all other colours of light can be made. These are called the primary colours. The primary colours cannot be made by mixing any other colours of light. The primary colours of light are:
RED BLUE GREEN
The primary colours of light are different from the primary colours in paints. The colours in light mix differently from the colours in paint.
The different colours that you see on a mobile phone, computer or television are all produced from combinations of the three primary colours of light. When you look very closely at some types of computer monitor, television or phone screen, you can see the individual sources of red, green and blue light.
When you look at a television or phone screen, you see far more colours than just red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow and white. Most screens can display 256 different colours. Changing the brightness of the primary colours makes all these different colours. For example, orange is made by adding red and green, but with the red brighter than the green. Research has shown that 256 is the maximum number of colours that most people can see.
Let's watch this video to learn how do we see:
1) Look at the picture and write the
result when these colors are added:
Red + Blue =
Green + Blue =
Green + Red =
Red + Green + Blue =
2) Visit the BBC website and answer:
a) What is dispersion?
b) Who first carried out experiments with prisms and light?
c) Solve the test at the end and if you have any wrong answer, then correct it in the notebook.
3) Visit the BBC website about colorblindness and:
a) Watch the video about the boy's story and write 3 examples of how could he tell he was colorblind
b) Is this condition more common in boys or girls? Mention the statistics
c) What causes color blindness?
4) Visit the WEEBLY website and play with the "Experiment with colors and color filters", try different filters, the 2 types of light, what happens when you have a filter of a color and a certain light?. Write 2 conclusions of the results
5) Investigate about how animals see and write about 2 animals that have a different sight from ours, how do they see?
6) Did you know that colors and psychology are closely related? Take this test to identify the color of your personality, then, write the color in your notebook and a couple of characteristics that are associated with this color.
7) Psychology of colors is also used to create the logos of brands trying to communicate certain characteristics. Visit the website Brandingforthepeople, choose a couple of logos from the same colour and explain why was this color used to promote the brand:
