You will use today's class to continue completing the reseach about your thesis.

Then you will choose 3 different questions about your thesis and will submit the answers through Schoology:

Instructions:

         Each girl in the group chooses 3 questions from the list below. Each student               should also answer a fourth question:

Do you support or refute your group’s thesis?

Explain your position with at least two strong arguments.

         Create a word document and copy the questions you chose.

         Answer them by paraphrasing some of the sources you found during the                     research stage or by finding new sources that contain information that might             help you.

         Submit the document with your answers in schoology. The assignment is                     called pre-debate questions.

🧠 Pre-Debate Guiding Questions 

🟣 Thesis 1: Vaping should be penalized the same way as cigarette smoking among teenagers.

  1. What is vaping and how does it affect teenagers' health?

  2. In what ways are vaping and smoking traditional cigarettes similar or different?

  3. What laws currently exist regarding the use of vapes by minors?

  4. Do you think teenagers understand the risks of vaping? Why or why not?

  5. What consequences might arise from penalizing vaping the same as cigarette use for teens, families, and schools?

  6. How does the vape industry target or influence teens (e.g., flavors, ads, design)?

🟡 Thesis 2: Social media platforms should be required to remove all ads or content promoting vaping or smoking.

  1. Where and how do you see content related to vaping or smoking on social media?

  2. What impact can this type of content have on teens and younger kids?

  3. Do you think social media platforms should control what gets posted? To what extent?

  4. What rights do content creators and viewers have?

  5. How easy or difficult would it be for social media to monitor and remove this type of content?

  6. What positive and negative consequences could this rule have?

🔵 Thesis 3: People with respiratory diseases caused by smoking should pay more for their medical care.

  1. What diseases can be caused by smoking?

  2. How responsible are people for the effects of their choices on their health?

  3. Is it fair for everyone to pay the same for medical care, regardless of their habits? Why?

  4. What would happen if people had to pay more for illnesses linked to personal choices?

  5. How might this affect people with fewer financial resources?

  6. Are there other examples where people pay more based on their lifestyle (e.g., insurance)?

🟢 Thesis 4: Diets that eliminate entire food groups (like keto or carnivore) should not be recommended as healthy lifestyles.

  1. What is considered a healthy diet according to nutrition experts?

  2. What food groups are important for the human body?

  3. What are the keto and carnivore diets? What do they eliminate, and why?

  4. What are the possible long-term benefits and risks of these diets?

  5. Are these diets appropriate for children or teenagers? Why or why not?

  6. What role do influencers or social media play in promoting these types of diets?

🎥 Video Debate Activity: "Argue It Out!"

Objective:


Students will create a short video in pairs presenting both pros and cons of the thesis they researched. They will simulate a mini debate, then give a final conclusion and their personal opinion.

📚 Instructions:

1. Work in pairs (from the same debate group).

2. Find a quiet please to record and create a video of

4–6 minutes where you present:​​

  • At least 3 arguments against the thesis.

  • At least 3 arguments in favor of the thesis.

  • The thesis you're working on (clearly stated at the beginning).

3. Structure your video like a mini debate:

  • You can take turns presenting each side.

  • Feel free to include facts, examples, or brief interviews.

 

4. Conclusion:

  • Decide which side (pro or con) gave stronger arguments.

  • Briefly justify your choice.

 

5. Personal Opinion:

  • Each of you should say what your personal opinion is and why.

This video along with the research activity will be evaluated and to assign the Project grade.
