Week 11
Project: Let's graph Cell Division

OBJECTIVES:
-
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding
of the key events and stages in meiosis.
-
Students will use playdough or similar materials to
represent these stages.
-
Students will explain the significance of mitosis and
meiosis in cell division and heredity.
Materials:
-
Markers and color pencils to draw the stages
-
Access to a computer or reference material
-
Paper and markers for labeling and explanation
INSTRUCTIONS
The project consists of two parts: Poster creation (pairs) and comprehension test (individually).
During the first 40 minutes each pair will create a poster about meiosis showing these stages:
Interphase (Chromosomes replication)
Prophase 1
Metaphase 1
Anaphase 1
Telophase 1
Prophase 2
Metaphase 2
Anaphase 2
Telephase 2
Cytokinesis
Use the following diagram as a template to create yours and follow the instructions below:
-
The title of the poster will be "MEIOSIS" or any other creative and/or related title. It will start with interphase and will finish in cytokinesis II (showing 4 separate cells). You can draw the initial cell or not (it's up to you).
-
This must be done for a cell with 2 pairs of chromosomes (4 in total). Each pair will have a different COLOR, this way you will be able to show the crossing over or recombination in a more visual way (this happens in prophase I)
-
At the end of the process your resultant cells should look completely different from each other due to the way meiosis happens (the chromosomes have different color combinations)

Don't forget to show crossing
over in this stage!
